Quick recognition: Use several traits together. Butterflies and moths belong to the same order, Lepidoptera, and exceptions are common.

What Is a Butterfly?

Butterflies are scale-winged insects in the order Lepidoptera. They are not a separate order from moths; biologically, they are specialized moth lineages. Most are active by day, but behavior alone does not settle an identification.

Identification

Life Cycle: Complete Metamorphosis

Crucial distinction: Nectar plants feed adults. Host plants feed caterpillars. A garden needs both to support a complete population.

Supporting Butterflies in a Garden

Butterfly or Moth?

Feature

Typical butterfly

Typical moth

Antennae

Usually clubbed

Often tapered or feathery

Typical activity

Mostly daytime

Mostly nighttime; many daytime exceptions

Resting wings

Often upright or spread for basking

Often rooflike, flat, or wrapped around body

Pupal covering

Usually exposed chrysalis

Often in cocoon, leaf litter, or soil

Body

Often slender

Often robust or furry

Threats and Good Judgment

Major pressures include habitat loss and fragmentation, pesticide exposure, invasive plants, poorly timed mowing, extreme weather, and climate-driven mismatch between insects and their food plants. Do not assume every caterpillar is a pest: identify it and estimate actual damage before acting.
