A dry, rocky homeland
Understanding Aloe vera begins with the Hajar Mountains of northern Oman: exposed ground, rapid drainage, strong light, and long dry intervals.

What the environment teaches us
Drainage is structural, not optional
Rocky ground sheds water quickly. In a pot, an open drainage hole and a coarse, airy mix imitate that function better than a deep layer of gravel beneath dense soil.
Water arrives in pulses
A succulent leaf stores water between rain events. Indoor care should alternate thorough watering with a real drying period—not frequent small sips.
Light must be strong but introduced gradually
The native landscape is bright. A plant grown behind glass, however, needs gradual acclimation before receiving long periods of direct outdoor sun.
