“To understand the care of a plant, understand its native climate and environment.”
Information Sheets: https://PlantEducationProject.com
A forest is a dynamic ecosystem in which trees are a major structural component. Climate sets the broad limits; soils, fire, wind, flooding, insects, disease, and human use create the actual forest. Global classifications usually begin with tropical, subtropical, temperate, and boreal climatic domains, then divide them by moisture, seasonality, leaf habit, and elevation.
Major Forest Types
Type | Climate | Structure and plants | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
Tropical rainforest | Warm and wet all year; weak temperature seasonality. | Tall multilayer canopy, lianas, epiphytes, extremely high tree diversity. | Amazon, Congo Basin, Southeast Asia |
Tropical seasonal / dry | Warm year-round; pronounced wet and dry seasons. | Many trees shed leaves during drought; fire sensitivity varies. | India, Madagascar, Central America |
Temperate deciduous | Moderate rain; warm summers and cold winters. | Broadleaf trees shed leaves annually; rich spring herb layer. | Eastern North America, Europe, East Asia |
Temperate rainforest | Mild temperatures; heavy rain, fog, and ocean influence. | Very large conifers or evergreen broadleaf trees; mosses and ferns. | Pacific Northwest, Chile, New Zealand |
Boreal / taiga | Long cold winters; short cool summers; snow important. | Mostly conifers; peatlands, lakes, mosses, lichens; fire-adapted mosaics. | Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia, Siberia |
Special Forest Environments
- Montane and cloud forests: Elevation cools air; persistent cloud supplies moisture and supports mosses, epiphytes, and endemic species.
- Mediterranean woodlands: Wet winters and dry summers favor evergreen, small-leaved, fire-adapted trees and shrubs.
- Mangrove forests: Salt-tolerant trees occupy tropical and subtropical tidal coasts; roots trap sediment and shelter fisheries.
- Floodplain and swamp forests: Seasonal or permanent inundation controls oxygen, nutrients, seedling survival, and species composition.
- Planted forests: Established by planting or deliberate seeding; they may produce timber but do not automatically replace native forest functions.
How Forest Ecosystems Work
- Canopy layers create gradients of light, wind, humidity, and temperature.
- Dead wood, leaf litter, fungi, and soil organisms recycle nutrients and store carbon.
- Disturbance is normal: gaps, fire, storms, floods, insects, and herbivores maintain shifting mosaics of age and structure.
- Mycorrhizal fungi connect roots to soil resources; pollinators and seed dispersers link plants to animals.
Threats and Stewardship
Key pressures include conversion to agriculture, fragmentation, unsustainable logging, invasive species, altered fire, overabundant herbivores, pests, drought, and rapid climate change. Sound stewardship protects large connected landscapes, old trees, dead wood, soil, waterways, native species, and a natural range of disturbance—not simply tree cover.
Key Takeaway
A forest is more than trees. Its identity comes from climate, structure, soils, water, disturbance, decomposers, and the long relationships among organisms.
